If you want a little blues to go along with your hip hop the next time you hit up Metro, place Brother Ali at the top of your list. While his lyrics have always been poignant, deeply personal, and always a thoughtful commentary on his life and the world events which affect him, “Pen to Paper” from his new album All the Beauty in This Whole Life showcases a sudden urgency that juxtaposes his normally laid-back approach, perhaps because he has a lot on his mind. No doubt a lot of shit has gone down in the five years it’s been since his last release.
