Chvrches is a band whose name I definitely read more than said out loud when I first started listening to them, so my friends were understandably confused when I said: “Hey guys, you should check out this group called Cha-vur-ches.” Although I have found it tough to live that one down, Chvrches’ music as a listening experience made it all worth it. Unlike most groups who would consider themselves a band, Chvrches forgo guitars but still bring massive hooks through synthesizers a la M83. As far as Scottish indie music goes, this trio is a far cry from groups like weepy We Were Promised Jetpacks and, going farther back, an ocean away from twee Belle & Sebastian. The latest effort from the group, Love Is Dead, traffics in new producers and a more mainstream sound that’s ready for the stadium (or Lolla stage). It’s definitely a crowd you should want to be a part of.
