FLUME

LOLLAPALOOZA

August 4

The sonic kaleidoscope that is Flume’s music is bound to hypnotize and leave you in a state of dance-induced ecstasy. Or at least that’s the plan. The Australian producer, programmer, and DJ has remixed the songs of various famous artists over the years, adding his touch of escapist sounds to them for a slick effect. Hi This Is Flume is the artist’s latest mixtape, showcasing an array of luxurious music textures that take on a life of their own with the collaboration of artists like slowthai and SOPHIE. (The visualiser by Australian artist Jonathan Zawada also adds to the new mixtape.) Connoisseurs of dance music know that Flume has risen above his EDM contemporaries thanks to visuals that go beyond the standard video accompaniment. At Lollapalooza, Flume should offer avid dance music seekers the chance for a truly euphoric communal experience, driven by his ability to create atmospheres in which people can misplace their worries for a while.

PERRY FARRELL’S KIND HEAVEN

LOLLAPALOOZA

August 4

For Lollapalooza patriarch Perry Farrell, 2019 has been a special year. Aside from turning 60, Farrell released what would serve as both his second solo album and the soundtrack to his forthcoming immersive Las Vegas experience, entitled Kind Heaven. The album is a family affair, employing Farrell’s wife (and Satellite Party singer) Etty Lau and their two children on vocals, as well as heavy hitters Taylor Hawkins and Tommy Lee as co-composers. Musically, we’re treated to the classic crunchy psychedelia Farrell trademarked in Jane’s Addiction (“Pirate Punk Politician”) alongside funky electronica (“Spend the Body”) and lush chamber pop (“Let’s All Pray For This World”). Though he promises a multi-million dollar Vegas production, the road show for Kind Heaven is a stripped-down rock ‘n’ roll revue with a setlist spanning the breadth of Farrell’s 30-plus-year career. The massive festival he birthed now welcomes him home to help close out the weekend.

MEEK MILL

LOLLAPALOOZA

August 4

Meek Mill was already a household name among the battle rapper circuits and Philadelphia streets before he ever appeared on Maybach Music’s Self-Made, Vol. 1. His Dreamchasers mixtapes showcased his energetic, near-yelling type of flow. Following his debut LP Dreams & Nightmares, Meek steadily climbed the charts with each release, leading up to 2015’s Dreams Worth More than Money. From there, Meek faced several setbacks: a blistering diss track from Drake (“Back to Back”), a breakup with Nicki Minaj (whom he was dating at the time), and an arrest in 2017 followed by a year in prison. But none of that slowed down Meek Mill. Just a few months later, he released his critically acclaimed Championships, boasting features from Jay-Z, Cardi B, and of all people, Drake (in which the two officially squash the beef). Fans can catch Meek Mill triumphantly return with tracks like “Going Bad”, “Dangerous”, and “All Eyes on You”.

SHARON VAN ETTEN

LOLLAPALOOZA

August 4

Red Rose is a coffee house and record shop that also has live music. It’s located in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where Sharon Van Etten went to college. Though she dropped out of college after only a year, she remained in Murfreesboro for four more to work at the Red Rose and listen intently to the troubadour lyrics and dulcet tones of the rotating coffee shop virtuosos. At the time Van Etten was too afraid to perform herself, but she was secretly writing songs and finding her artistic voice in solitude. After a personal crisis sent her back to her home state of New Jersey, Sharon finally laid down some tracks to CD-R. On her latest album, Remind Me Tomorrow, this chill folk artist sets her guitar aside in favor of synths and textures. The shift in sound was met with critical acclaim and marks an exciting new phase in her career.
