For Lollapalooza patriarch Perry Farrell, 2019 has been a special year. Aside from turning 60, Farrell released what would serve as both his second solo album and the soundtrack to his forthcoming immersive Las Vegas experience, entitled Kind Heaven. The album is a family affair, employing Farrell’s wife (and Satellite Party singer) Etty Lau and their two children on vocals, as well as heavy hitters Taylor Hawkins and Tommy Lee as co-composers. Musically, we’re treated to the classic crunchy psychedelia Farrell trademarked in Jane’s Addiction (“Pirate Punk Politician”) alongside funky electronica (“Spend the Body”) and lush chamber pop (“Let’s All Pray For This World”). Though he promises a multi-million dollar Vegas production, the road show for Kind Heaven is a stripped-down rock ‘n’ roll revue with a setlist spanning the breadth of Farrell’s 30-plus-year career. The massive festival he birthed now welcomes him home to help close out the weekend.
