The word “pioneer” is thrown around somewhat haphazardly when it comes to the world of rock ‘n’ roll journalism. Yet you’d have to recuse yourself from the business if you weren’t to include Spoon on a Mt. Rushmore dedicated to indie music of the last 20 years. Britt Daniel and company have carved their name firmly into the genre’s core, yet continue to thwart expectations by creating some of the catchier blues-rock jams out there. While classic hits like “I Turn My Camera On” and “Cherry Bomb” are sure to have squadrons of people cutting a rug at the mere mention of them, their ninth album Hot Thoughts is a shining example of a band hungry to continue innovating. Austin sure has a lot of wonderful things to contribute to the world such as Dirty Sixth, Hippie Hollow, and the wildly stellar rock band Spoon. Dig in and get crunchy with them.
