BY ANGIE MARTIN
The threesome who comprise The Devil Makes Three play wholesome Americana tunes and hail from the three distinct states of California, Texas and Vermont. And to probably no coincidence, the band’s signature sound includes only three instruments: the tenor banjo, the upright bass and the guitar. But the number three doesn’t seem to go much further than that. Many of their tracks include lyrics about hardship and injustice, while their album artwork and brand explore deep symbology in both history and religion. The band members make smart, catchy music that often reflects the heart and pain of living in the United States, which in the early days of the Trump administration means more today than it ever has since their beginning in 2002.
