BY TESSA SOLOMON
Invoking the deep Americana sounds of Midwest rock, gospel, and folk, The Lumineers prove tradition (and foot-stomping, frenzied-strumming sets) is more than enough to rouse a crowd or command a stadium. Coping with the sorrow of his 19-year-old brother’s drug overdose, Jeremiah Fraites formed the band in 2002. Joined by guitarist/lead vocalist Wesley Schultz and cellist Neyla Pekarek following relocation from New York to Denver, they released two EPs before their self-titled album debuted to much critical acclaim in 2012. The album, led by the omnipresent single “Hey Ho,” went double platinum and cemented their place as major players in the contemporary folk landscape.
