And now…the award for “one of the best underrated sludge metal bands of the past decade” goes to…Miami’s Torche. As trippy as metal can get, Torche has mastered the fine art of incorporating catchy U2-like hooks and airy Jane’s Addiction-style vocals into a blistering sound. Every simple driving beat exposes another unchartered layer to the music, delivering a very specific sound that is all their own. Each album clocks in at a hair over 30 minutes, best heard in rapid succession as true grit can be heard in unequivocal crowd pleasers like “Annihilation Affair” and “In Pieces.”
